Book Review – The 55 Concepts

Background

Michael Cavallaro is a spiritual teacher and mentor, author, musician and artist who’s worked for over 30 years teaching ways for students to create their own lives.  The current version of his book The 55 Concepts is published in 2009, while its first edition was released in 2004.  The 55 Concepts is available in paperback and is 191 pages long.

Book Review & Commentary

The 55 Concepts is a unique book for several reasons.  Rather than following the format of most self help books (including chapters discussing different ideas), it’s instead organized into three sections.  An introduction, a description of the 55 Concepts (I’ll dig into this deeper in a moment), and examples of how to use these concepts.  Michael suggests that a reader go through the material once in full, then use it as a reference book to look back upon frequently.  In fact, its a good book to leave on the coffee table such that you can browse through the concepts from time to time.

In reviewing its design, the book is a very quick read.  About half of the pages are a few sentences, so it’s realistic to get through the whole 191 pages in 1-2 hours (and I am no speed reader).  That being said, the real impact of the book is in its simplicity, and the message that it presents.

What are the 55 Concepts?  Simply put, these are 55 different truths that can support the reader in creating a better life.  Some (in fact probably most) are things that most people already know.  Others may be a novelty and may push you to see the world in a new way.  While others, they may challenge your belief system – providing you with an opportunity to grow or an opportunity to reject what is stated.  What is important about The 55 Concepts is that each engages you in looking into your own role in this world and to support you in seeing how you create the world that you are experiencing.

How were the 55 Concepts formed?  That is a question I can not answer.  For sure, there is no scientific study that has proven that these are universal truths that we must live by.  The topics are far too ethereal for that.  But, in reading the materials, I strongly resonate with the explanations and suggestions provided and feel Michael has an excellent foundation for supporting people in creating positive change.  Furthermore, the book creates a spaciousness for reflection in the reader, supporting one to lower their guard and to find their own truth in the materials that are being read.

While none of the concepts written about were completely foreign for me, I still found ample value in reading through them.  Several specific statements gave me insight into different ways of thinking about spiritual principles, and more importantly one concept in particular is making me more conscious of how I act with those that I love.  Its not the profundity of the writings that have caught my attention, rather its the act of review of this fantastic set of key points which is supportive of creating change.

Who is this book for?

If you are a life coach, personal growth, or spiritual coach, this book is a great one to have on your shelves and to refer your clients to.  If you are ‘unhappy’ with the way your life looks at this time, this is also a great book to read through.  If you’ve been feeling like everyone is against you and that things never seem to go your way – this is a fantastic book to read.  Having relationship troubles – this book offers a fresh perspective on how to work through them.  Or, if you like to have positive reinforcements, you are a proponent of conscious living and you’ve got a coffee table itching for a centerpiece – then this book could be great for you as well!
