'Balance' Newsletter - Issue 1

Dear [firstname,fallback=reader]

Introduction:
To my clients, subscribers, partners, colleagues, family and friends - I want to welcome you to the first issue of 'Balance' and thank you for supporting this newsletter by being one of the original subscribers on my distribution list.  Your support as a reader is the foundation for my success and I greatly appreciate the contribution each and every one of you is making.

The 'Balance' newsletter is a monthly e-mail publication written to provide an opportunity for you, the reader, to bring personal well-being or wellness to the forefront of your attention.  This newsletter will offer inspirational stories of unprecedented success, practical suggestions to improve physical wellness, opportunities to reflect on those items of true value in life, and useful tips for taking action towards designing and maintaining a healthy, balanced and fulfilling lifestyle.

This newsletter is truly for everyone.  As I have learned, you are never too young to ask what if, you are never too old to make a change,
you are never too busy to say I am willing, and you are never unable to touch someone's heart.  These are the messages that will be shared throughout the newsletter.

In closing the introduction, I'd like to ask for your support by forwarding this email to friends, family and colleagues such that they too can receive this free publication.  There is no commitment and they can unsubscribe any time.  Anyone with email can sign up by clicking this link.  I thank you for sharing this gift.

Today's Article: Why Balance?

Being the introductory newsletter, I personally wanted to share the story of how 'Balance' came in
to being and provide an opportunity to reflect on the question - where might I be out of balance?

Those of you that knew me (and knew me well) back in November of 2003, realized that if there was one thing that I lacked in life - it was balance.  This was a period in which I was working a full time job in the Silicon Valley and participating in a two year intensive evening
MBA program.  For the first time in my life, my exercise routine, my diet, my sleep routine, my social life and my passion for what I was doing had completely dissolved.  Life was filled with an unhealthy amount of activity, but December was rapidly approaching - the month of graduation and the possibility for relief.

As many of you know, my relief did come in December, however it was in a manner that I never would have anticipated.  On Christmas Eve, four days after graduation, I was diagnosed with Leukemia.  When asked if I were tired or experiencing low energy - my answer was not at all, but today I sense that I was so out of balance that I wouldn't have even known if it were the schedule or the sickness!

As many of the readers here know, cancer has a way of changing your focus to those things in life that hold true value.  Family, friendships, relationships, health, compassion, and fresh air to name a few.  Now, the purpose of this email is not to encourage sympathy, it is to inspire possibility.  In looking back, this has been the most powerful catalyst for change in my life.  I am so proud to say that these last three years have been the most productive and fulfilling of my life.  The great news is that the foundation for this transformation has not been the complex set of circumstances that led me to being diagnosed and the trickle down effect it had on my life - the reality is very simple.  I had a shift in what was important to me.  A whole new set of priorities arose in my life and those became the focus of my attention.  I also allowed the support I needed to enter into my life for perhaps the first time.

I offer this story in the first issue to share a message that one does not need a 'catastrophic' event to occur in order to shift the focus of their attention.  In fact, it is as simple as taking the time for yourself to look and see where things are going great, and where you may be out of 'balance' in life.  The diagram on the right (the components of wellness) is a good starting point to begin looking.  Do any of the components of wellness jump out at you when you look at this diagram?  What actions have you taken (or not taken) that bring this aspect to your attention?

In closing, I'd like to share a small vision with you.  My vision is that this newsletter will be able to touch lives and invoke a positive shift - before a 'catastrophic' event takes place (and quite possibly even prevent it!).  I envision a readership that has balance in physical, spiritual and financial wellness, and this is represented not only in the people they are, but also in the actions they take.

Thank you so much for being one of the original subscribers to this newsletter.  I greatly appreciate your interest and your continued support in sharing this vision.

Monthly Action:
Each month a small exercise will be offered to the readers:
*Take 1 hour out of the week and spend some time for yourself
*Look at the components of wellness and see if any of these components jump out at you
*What actions (or inaction) have you taken that make this stand out
*What is one action you can do to release some of the energy held up here
