Today's Article: Getting what you are worth in 2008
As
with every year, I've had an incredible opportunity over the past month
to evaluate my health, personal development, and financial goals for
the year 2008. Its always an exciting time as the new year brings
about the opportunity to make a declaration to myself in which I focus
my attention on a specific outcome. Since I am very familiar with
the tools and processes to bring about success, simply making the
declaration itself is a big and exciting step for me to take!
During
the time I was doing my annual assessment, I happened to be listening
to a series of interviews hosted by Bill Harris (one of the stars of 'The Secret'),
and he mentioned that a number of years ago he was challenged by a
mentor by being asked - do you believe you could earn 10x what you are
earning now? What a question! Talk about stirring up some
real doubt about the value of your time and expertise!
I
used this as a learning opportunity. Isn't it interesting that I
personally had some real 'stuff' get stirred up when I considered the
possibility of making 10x what I am making today. For those of
you reading - you can see even a coach is not immune to the
conversations stirring about in our heads - we all need to be
challenged with such inquiries and asked how we can grow.
I began by asking myself a series of questions: -Do I really want to make 10x what I am making today? -What would life look like if I were making 10x what I am making today? -What would I want life to look like while I am on the path towards making 10x what I am making today? -What kinds of things would I need to do to make 10x what I am making today? -Who could be a valuable mentor in my growth path to support me in making 10x what I am making today? -What questions do I have that I need to get answered?
Now,
certainly a few thougths passed through my mind that were
counterproductive. I began thinking, geez this is probably going
to be a lot of work.
I am going to have a schedule with no flexibility, no time for my
family, no time to focus on my health - and these things are very
important to me. Sound familiar??? Here's where I've been able to catch myself.
The quality of these thoughts are a perfect demonstration of our
incredible capability to talk ourselves out of a true possibility
without even trying or having any evidence it would look this way.
Why can't I grow my income 10x, while maintaining a healthy
lifestyle, enjoying my family and having flexibility in my schedule.
I was clearly thinking along a destructive thought process that
would lead me to prove that it could not be done. So, I
appreciate the feedback oh powerful brain of mine and I am more interested in how I
would make 10x what I am making today - these thoughts won't hold me
back!
Now back to you. How do you get what you are worth
in 2008? If you've been frustrated with your salary, with your
business development, with the circumstances that have prevented you
from achieving your worth, then ask yourself the questions you are
uncomfortable looking at. Rather than wallowing in the
frustration, ask yourself what you'd need to do to attain your
financial goals. You may not have the answers up front, but
continue to ask yourself for ways to make it happen and write down all
the ways you can think of, or who you know that might offer advice.
This process might take a day, a week or even a month. You
may not be comfortable challenging yourself at increasing your revenue
10x. And if you are uncomfortable observe what is really coming
up for you that makes you hesitate to even ask yourself this question.
What are you learning from this powerful inquiry?
As
for 2008, I may or may not be able to make 10x my revenue in this year
- I will let the universe decide the outcome. Regardless, I will
take the actions that will lead me in that direction - having asked the
questions above has given me a clear path to make this happen.
So
if you've struggled to meet your personal financial goals in the past,
rather than looking outside for reasons look inside for solutions.
And if the solutions seem out of reach, ask yourself what's
happening inside that is the root of these discussions. What
conversation do you need to change to get clear direction as to how to
make your goals come true. This principle applies not only to
finances, but to health, relationships, spiritual development and
happiness as well. Until next time - have a fantastic new year!
